With the release of Project Cambria from Meta due in the near future, there was an update a short while ago on the Quest 2 that showcased Meta’s mixed reality passthrough technology.
Currently limited to greyscale (no colour), the experience released was titled “The World Beyond”. Whilst I found this very limited in terms of content, the part that captured my eye was the initial passthrough setup titled “Experimental Room Setup”. Being able to add surrounding objects from the real world and view them in the headset (or show up just before I am about to hit them) is not only a significant safety feature but was one, I was very impressed by. Project Cambria is set to have increased depth sensing, higher resolution and the added feature of colour for it’s mixed reality passthrough.
If you do have access to a Quest 2 headset, I recommend giving it a go yourself as there is no substitute for the real experience and gives a small insight into the future of mixed reality headsets.
To setup this feature;
1: Open the settings menu and click on the “Guardian” icon.
2: Once in the “Guardian” section, click “General” on the left hand side and scroll down to “Room Setup – Experimental” and click setup.
3: Follow the prompts on screen to setup your space by including walls, desks and other significant components.
