The Apple Vision Pro is an upcoming mixed reality headset that has the potential to push forward headset technology. In particular spatial computing by blending the digital and physical worlds in an effort to promote productivity and provide unique entertainment experiences. It was announced on June 5th 2023 and is expected to be released early 2024. The announcement video can be found here.

The Vision Pro is equipped with an ultra-high-resolution display system that packs 23 million pixels across two displays. This ensures every experience feels like it’s taking place in front of the user’s eyes in real time. The headset also features an array of advanced cameras and sensors that work together to understand the user’s environment and detect hand input.

Why Would You Use It?

The potential use cases for the Vision Pro are vast and transformative. For instance, users can assemble furniture with instructions digitally projected onto the parts. The headset also offers an infinite canvas for apps, transforming the way users interact with their favourite applications. Users can arrange apps anywhere and scale them to the perfect size, creating their ideal workspace while staying present in the world around them.

In terms of entertainment, the Vision Pro can transform any room into a personal movie theatre. Users can expand their movies, shows, and games up to the perfect size while feeling like they’re part of the action with Spatial Audio. Moreover, the headset is Apple’s first 3D camera, allowing users to capture spatial photos and videos in 3D. There are many more potential applications particularly for entertainment. Imagine being able to watch an NBA game courtside using the headset at just a fraction of the regular cost of seeing it in person. Not only would it be very convenient, but it would open up the experience to millions who likely would never have the chance to get that kind of experience.

Can Apple Break The Mould?

When compared to similar devices on the market, the Vision Pro stands out due to its high-resolution video, intuitive controls, and comfortable fit. However, the device’s high price tag of $3,500 (USD) may be a barrier for most consumers. Despite this, because it is an Apple product there is a large chance the headset will succeed as Apple has a history of long-term consumers buying their products upon each iteration.

Whilst Apple’s strength has been mobile phones their design philosophy of just getting the feel right has worked well. Hopefully this will translate to the Vision Pro as a major problem headsets face is the comfort and fatigue factor. Apple has the chance to break open the headset market by using the Apple image and generally loyal consumer base to promote what has historically been a niche product. This wouldn’t be the first time either that Apple has helped accelerate an emerging technology with their own product, the most recent example being the Air Pods for wireless headphones.

The Apple Vision Pro potential use cases are vast, and its high-quality features set it apart from similar devices on the market. As spatial computing continues to evolve, the Vision Pro is poised to be at the forefront of this exciting new era of technology. Whilst the product doesn’t release till 2024 there are some early reviews for those with access to it here.
